The granting of citizenship to a "female" AI in Saudi Arabie is a very clever way to agitate for equal rights in this mostly medieval country. Nothing more; nothing less.

No one has yet achieved self-awareness in an AI. While they surpass us humans in increasingly many areas of intelligence and creativity, for so long as they lack the capability of self-awareness, they will also lack the potential for real personhood.

Nevertheless, Sophia (Greek for "wisdom"; not a conventional Arabic name) is a powerful vehicle.

My belief is that the Saudi ruler, MBS, thought this a clever way to campaign for women's rights without the degree of outrage that full, immediate rights for Saudi women would cause.

His extreme ruthlessness, which has horrified many of us, is coupled with great shrewdness and a clear, consistent desire to bring Saudi Arabia out of the 7th century and into the 21st culturally.

I hate to say it, but it appears that he is exactly the leader needed to do this, whatever his personal qualities may be.

I think about how to create societies of sustainable, technological abundance. My book, A Celebration Society, offers one solution. It has been well received.
